Why you should replace your air filter this winter

December 13, 2016

We emphasize preventative maintenance on your heating and cooling system frequently, but this doesn’t only mean annual tune-ups – it also means checking your air filters. It’s a simple way to help keep your system working smoothly and increase your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it all yourself! Today is the best time to examine your filter, as the cold season comes to an end and summer is on the horizon. There are many benefits to changing out your air filter, such as:

Increasing the life and efficiency of your system
A definite way to instigate a system interruption is a dirty air filter. Excess dirt that is built up on your filter can cause your whole system to work harder than it should to keep the air in your home cool. Not only will it hamper the performance of your system, but it can increase your energy costs and result in your system overheating.

Enhancing indoor air quality
The reason for an air filter is that it snatches contaminants through your air system before it enters your house. As the filter gets older, the less effective it is in trapping things like dust and mold that can affect the health and comfort of your home, which is even more critical if someone in your house suffers from allergies or asthma. With increased temperatures around the corner, pollen and mold are especially expected to be hanging around and you certainly don’t like the idea of it moving in your house. A quality, clean air filter will help your household breathe easy and stay healthy throughout allergy season.

Check your system or ask your HVAC technician for suggestions on how frequently you should be changing your filter. For most filters through Miller Climate Control LLC, we recommend an annual change with the highest MERV filter you have access to. Not sure if it’s the best time to exchange your air filter?
